WONKA BAR

All pop-ups are good, but some are more good than others — like the ones that serve OTT desserts. To celebrate the Melbourne premiere of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory musical, Wonka Bar is popping up in The Westin Melbourne. Get your tastebuds (and Instagram) ready!

To put it mildly, it looks like a chocolate unicorn puked in the hotel’s Lobby Bar. There are technicolour treats everywhere, from the snacks to the cocktails and even an edible garden installation. And it’s all available for you to absolutely demolish.

Wonka Bar is a collaboration between the on-site culinary team and local sweet heroes Burch & Purchese, whose Instagram is enough to make my stomach feel sick. I need to go there ASAP.

Together, they’ve created a menu of five decadent desserts and four show-stopping cocktails. Like the Everlasting Showstopper (salted coffee crumb, caramelised white chocolate, passionfruit curd, avocado cream and banana ice-cream) or the Black Forest & Chocolate River (chocolate sponge on a crunchy biscuit base with chocolate twigs and a warm chocolate river).

Or try the Coconut, Blueberry & Violet Beauregard (coconut cake and marshmallow, blueberry compote and violet ice-cream). There’s even an edible Golden Ticket — a gold chocolate bar with dark chocolate mousse, salted caramel and smoked vanilla ice cream.

Sip on a Blueberry Gumball (vodka, blue curacao, raspberry balsamic and cordial, and soda water topped with popping candy, fairy floss and a viola flower) or order the dreamy dark chocolate Pure Imagination cocktail.

There’s even a Willy Wonka-grade Passion Pop creation with vodka, passionfruit puree, vanilla syrup and fresh lime juice, served with a shot of prosecco and topped with passionfruit.

Off the menu, there’s a massive chocolate garden on display. Tend to your garden to find a giant chocolate mushroom, toadstools, flowers, butterflies and much more.

If you’re not lucky enough to be in Melbourne, hopefully you can get to The Grounds Garden of Sweets in Sydney instead!
