Fast Food Restaurants We Wish Would Open In Australia

Fast food: saving our souls one hangover at a time.

But if there’s anything our friends in the USA do better than us Aussies, it’s fast food restaurants. For every Oporto we’ve got Down Under, there’s a Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A and take-away cob loaf calling to us from across the ocean.

The disrespect! The inhumanity! The sheer audacity of denying us more greasy burgers.

While In-N-Out does grace our shores with semi-regular pop-ups, and we now have Taco Bell in Australia, it’s about time that Australia got a few more of these legendary fast food joints.

Here are 6 American fast food restaurants we need in Australia ASAP:

#1 In-N-Out

Mary’s, eat your heart out. The Californian burger joint In-N-Out is said to make the best cheeseburger in America. It’s so good that Kim Kardashian orders it with cheese fries and a vanilla shake as her cheat meal.

The Aussie pop-ups have sold out within thirty minutes, with locals lining up around the block for the Double Double and Animal Style burgers. Obviously there’s a market for a permanent store here. In-N-Out, call me.

#2 Wendy’s

No, not the ice cream shop that people who grew up in rural Australia remember. Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting that our Wendy’s goes anywhere. The Flake Shake is a cultural institution and anyone who tries to take it away deserves to be locked up.

But Australia’s big enough for two fierce ladies named Wendy. The Wendy’s Frosty is something in between a milkshake and a soft serve, and would make a great contribution to Australian culture.

#3 Chick-fil-A

We can all agree that Australia needs more waffle fries. What can we say, potato just tastes better when it’s been crinkle cut. Waffle fries are a Chick-fil-A specialty, along with a staggering number of chicken sandwiches.

We’re not thrilled about the grilled chicken nuggets tbh. Anyone who tries to make nuggs healthy is a fraud, but nobody said we have to keep the menu exactly the same when these fast food restaurants make their way to Australia.

#4 Sonic Drive-In

You know what Australia needs more of? Drive-through only restaurants.

Imagine this: you’re getting hungry but you don’t want to cook, and you’re starting to worry that your most fulfilling relationship is with the Uber Eats driver. What are you going to do? You’re going to hop in your car (or message a friend who has a car) and get the a chilli cheese burrito and a corn dog from Sonic, a fast food joint that’s exclusively drive through. Dinner, sorted.

#5 Popeyes

If Popeyes ever opens in Australia, this lady had better be at the official opening.

Then when it’s open, we can all get our hands on chicken tenders, wings and burgers. We’d expect the sides to make the move as well, like Cajun rice, green beans, red beans and rice, and even popcorn shrimp.

#6 Panera Bread

For a nation that’s obsessed with cob loafs, Australia’s lack of a fast food cob is staggering. Enter Panera Bread, a bakery-style fast food restaurant that specialises in filling loaves of bread with dip, soup and lots and lots of cheese.

They’ve also got fresh sandwiches, salads, smoothies and monstrously big cookies. But the cobs are, of course, the real star of the show. Yes please!
