You’ve Never Seen New York Like This Before
We’ve never seen the city that never sleeps like this before.
These incredible aerial photos were captured by filmmaker and photographer Vincent Laforet who chose to move beyond the typical tourist peace-sign snap in front of the Statue Of Liberty, instead opting for a slightly more drastic vantage point – leaning out of a helicopter with no doors hovering 2200 metres above the cityscape on a freezing cold night. Needless to say, the results were magical.
Laforet has flown hundreds of hours of photo flights around the world but claims this was the most frightening, despite nothing eventful really happening. In his own words, “the real scary part was that there’s just simply nothing quite like leaning out of that chopper over the sea of darkness and light, held in only by a full body harness…There is no chance that you will fall – the harness is tried and true. But you do think about the fall.”
The shoot, which was orchestrated for Men’s Health Magazine, allowed the helicopter to fly at much higher altitudes than a normal chopper flight via extensive planning and special clearances. They were even cleared to fly above aeroplanes landing at New York airports.
From this perspective, the streets of New York look like a computer’s motherboard or a Lego city made of lights, carefully constructed by some gigantic Godzilla-sized toddler.
Let’s hear it for New York.
