You’ve Gotta Eat This: Sfenj, Morocco

What is it? While they kind of look like a deflated version of a regular doughnut, this North African sweet is like a sugar explosion in your mouth.

sfenj

Where can you get it? Sfenj can be found in Morocco and the greater Maghreb region of North Africa. There’s variations all across the region too including Khfaf in Algeria and Sfingi in southern Italy.

What’s in it? Just your basic flour, wheat, salt and an extra helping of sugar. Sometimes they’re spiced as well which is extra yummy.

Is it good for you? Nah, not really. They’re softer than your regular doughnut and have a fresh and light taste that will definitely make you go back for seconds. And thirds.

How much does it cost? Not much at all – grab a few of these from a local streetside vendor and eat your heart out.
