You’ve Gotta Eat This: Devil’s Tres Leches

What is it? While chilli-flavoured chocolate is nothing new, the exotic Devil’s Tres Leches takes spicy desserts to a whole other level – and a fiery one at that.

Where can you get it? Only at food truck turned brick and mortar restaurant Chego in Los Angeles.

What’s in it? The mastermind behind this delicacy is Korean-American chef Roy Choi, who came into prominence with his gourmet Korean taco truck Kogi. With the same approach to cross-cultural cuisine on display at Chego, Choi has taken a classic Tres Leches cake and turned it into spicy Devil food that’s not for the faint of heart.

A Tres Leches cake is a sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk – evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk and heavy cream. To make a Devil‘s Tres Leche’s cake, Chego take a buttery slice of tres leches cake, infuse it with cinnamon and cayenne-pepper flavoured evaporated milk, then add tapioca pudding and spicy peanut brittle. Mmmmm.

Is it good for you? A bite of this spicy heaven won’t kill you, but you’ll definitely feel extra special hanging your tongue out to air-dry on your way home. BYO milk/cucumber/bread/anti-spicy device.

How much does it cost? $4! An insanely cheap price for an insanely good idea.
