You Need To Jump In The World’s Largest Plastic Ball Pit Right Now
Museums can’t all be The Lourve, and thank goodness for that. Don’t get me wrong – the classics are amazing – but sometimes art should be something you can immerse yourself in. You know, something you can literally jump in to with child-like abandon.
Enter a new exhibition called The Beach at The National Building Museum in Washington D.C. which is actually just the giant plastic ball pit of your dreams. And also art. Obviously.

The Beach is a huge monochromatic enclosure covering 10,000 square feet of the museum’s foyer with an “ocean” of around one million recyclable translucent plastic balls.
It’s created by experimental architectural studio Snarkitecture and is part of the museum’s Summer Block Party series. They’ve also installed all of the beach-side trimmings – beach chairs, umbrellas, paddleball and a pier – to give visitors a complete summer day experience.
The ball pit edges against mirrored walls to reflect the illusion of an area as vast as the ocean itself, and admission isn’t timed so you can “swim” and relax at your leisure.
