You Can Rent This Giant Cave In The Blue Mountains

It's less than two hours from Sydney.

One AirBnB listing in Bell, New South Wales comes with all the usual amenities –bathrooms, bedrooms, a bonus billiard table – plus a pretty special spare room. Guests who book in at the “Hatters Hideout and Lodge”, located on eight acres of private property in the stunning Blue Mountains wilderness, can choose between a comfy, luxurious stay in a three-bedroom mountain lodge decorated with quaint Australiana, or an “environmental retreat” in an enormous cavern just a ten minute walk from the house.

Described as a “sandstone cathedral” 20 metres high, wide and deep, the Hatters Hideout cavern has similar size and shape dimensions to the small shell of the Sydney Opera House and (so the owners claim) better acoustics.

Using minimal impact construction techniques, the cave has been decked out with running water, a small kitchen, a composting toilet, solar-powered lights, a gas barbecue and a fire pit for large groups wanting to camp comfortably while admiring this natural marvel.

Hatters Hideout and Lodge welcomes group bookings for up to 16 people, and the proprietors lead guests on a guided “bush walk and talk” upon arrival.  Add to that the breathtaking views of the Wollangambe wilderness and Wollemi World Heritage Area, and we guarantee that after this five-star experience, you won’t ever want to return to civilisation.
