You Can Airbnb Dracula’s Castle This Halloween & Yes, The Bed Is A Coffin

The misty mountain retreat known as Bran Castle – found in the Carpathian Mountains in the heart of Transylvania – dates back to the 14th century, but it really gained notoriety in 1897 when Bram Stoker used it as inspiration for a little horror novel he wrote called Dracula – you might’ve heard of it.

Well now, in the most 2016 news ever, Dracula’s Castle is making a grand entrance into the sharing economy. Yep, you can Airbnb it. Billed as its “spookiest listing to date”, Airbnb is offering up a night in the castle this Halloween, with guests basically reliving the story of Dracula’s protagonist Jonathan Harker’s journey into the vampiric lair.

Not creepy at all.

It starts with a horse-drawn carriage ride through Transylvania to meet your host, Dacre Stoker, ‘vampire expert’ and the great nephew of Bram, who’ll get you comfortable, cosy and settled in for the evening ahead. Just kidding! He’ll actually tell a bunch of super creepy vampire tales and legends about Vlad the Impaler, the real life dude who Dracula was based on. Spoiler alert: he was not a nice dude.

From here, you can explore the castle’s dark corridors, walk its creaky staircases and peer into the dark abysses of its many frightening nooks and crannies. A trip through a secret passage leads to a grand dining room, where a candlelit dinner, taken straight out of Stoker’s novel, will be served (robber beef steak and paprika hendl chicken, anyone?).

Night-at-Dracula-3
Mm-hmm. Nothing unusual here!

Then – the crescendo – you’ll tuck yourself into a literal coffin (granted, a luxe velvet-trimmed one) in a secluded crypt and be left alone for the night to, um, ‘sleep’. Oh, that sound? Don’t mind that, it’s just wolves howling directly outside of the castle walls. Night night!

Night-at-Dracula-5
Just delightful.

When the break of dawn finally arrives (and we bet it won’t be soon enough), there’ll be a nice breakfast served on the castle’s terrace watching the sunrise and praising its vampire-deterrent rays.

Sound fun? Yeah, we’re not convinced either, but if you’re one of those people who love to scare themselves silly, then head to the Airbnb listing. Here, you can win the chance to spend the night at Dracula’s Castle with a friend on October 31 by answering this question: “What would you say to the Count if you were to come face-to-fang with him in his own castle?” (Our answer isn’t suitable for print, FYI.) Entries close on October 26, and the winner and their plus one will be flown in from anywhere in the world.

Oh yeah, and make sure to abide by the house rules: no mirror selfies, no garlic, and close all curtains before sunrise.
