The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Have Been Named

The annual World’s 50 Best Restaurants list has been announced for 2016, with Italy’s destination restaurant Osteria Francescana taking out the top prize.

Voted in by a panel of almost 1000 gastronomic experts worldwide, Osteria Francescana took out the golden crown after two years in second place. Osteria Francescana, helmed by Italian chef Massimo Bottura, is found in the backstreets of Modena in Northern Italy and serves up creative and passionate dishes with a subversive twist on classic Italian standards.

best
El Celler de Can Roca.

Second place went to the hugely popular El Celler de Can Roca, found just north-east of Barcelona. Run by the three Roca brothers who are each global leaders in their respective fields – Joan as a chef, Josep as a sommelier and Jordi as a patissier. New York’s Eleven Madison Park came in third, followed closely by Lima’s shining glory Central.

René Redzepi’s Nordic institution Noma made it in at #5, following a successful run at Sydney’s Barangaroo earlier in the year.

attica
Pears and Maidenii from Attica.

So how did Australia fare? Ben Shewry’s humble Ripponlea abode Attica came up trumps, taking out #33 on the esteemed list. Attica was praised for its “uniquely Australian” approach, which takes references to Aussie culture and history and plays them out through the restaurant’s menu. This comes in the form of Attica’s staple dessert, Gazza’s Vegemite pie, and their use of wattleseed bread, halftime oranges and Anzac marshmallows. Fair dinkum!
