Why You Should Spend Next Easter In Byron Bay

Whether you spend your Easter long weekend with friends or family, doing so in one of Australia’s busiest tourist destinations might sound about as appealing as playing leap-frog with a unicorn. However, when your family is insisting on spending the break together, Byron might be a surprisingly accommodating option for all. Between the world-renowned Bluesfest music festival, attractive weather and epic food, Byron Bay is the best way to distract everyone from the inevitable disputes and grievances that come with group travel (or at least give them a more idyllic setting for it all?)

#1 Get down at Bluesfest

Boasting one of the most diverse festival line-ups in the world (I challenge you to find another festival featuring Kendrick Lemar and Melissa Etheridge on the same bill), Bluesfest is your best reason for luring the crew to Byron Bay over Easter. What better way to round off a day at Wategos Beach than wandering between five stages of the world’s best Blues and Roots music while Mum and Dad kick it in their camping chairs at a safe distance from their stage of choice. The all-ages festival, which runs for an epic five days, is just a 15 minute drive out of Byron proper, or if you’re keen, you could pack a trailer and camp on site.

#2 Embrace the endless summer

While the chill has well and truly set in across most of Australia, Byron Bay at Easter is suspended in mid summer. Aside from the occasional tropical rain shower, the average days in March reach a comfortable 26°C – perfect for long days sheltered from the breeze at local haunts The Pass and Wategos. If you want to explore a little, make your way around the point to Tallows Beach on the edge of the Arakwal National Park, or head off the beaten track and discover the spectacular Whites Beach. If you’re feeling super liberated from all that magnetic Byron Bay energy, leave your parents behind and check out Kings Beach, a popular (albeit unofficial) nudist beach.

Families that Fleet together stay together and if you book now and you might just get a table for next Easter at Fleet – a tiny Modern Australian power-house with a killer wine list and obscure beer selection in Brunswick Heads. If you’re looking for something a little more low-key head to Byron Bay institution The Farm but – hot tip – don’t dwell with the masses. Grab some take-away pastries and coffee and set down a picnic rug in the shade of their pecan plantation for a lazy afternoon.

#4 Get healthy AF

Where else but Byron could you come out the other side of Easter feeling better than before? Byron is a mecca for all things wellness and Easter is no exception. Kill two birds with one stone at Chocolate Yoga, a class that literally involves a cacao ceremony with Kundalini yoga. Feast on organic hot cross buns from the Hinterland’s Harvest Cafe then burn them off with a Stand Up Paddle Board Tour through the Byron Marine Park or a walk to the the easternmost point of the mainland Australia, Cape Byron. If you’re still feeling sluggish, go full Byron Bay and head to Naked Treaties, a raw vegan cafe in the centre of Byron with smoothies that bear names like ‘I Am Abundant’ and ‘I Am Warrior’ – how could you not feel healthy after that?
