Which Aussie City Made The New York Times 2016 Travel List?
The New York Times have unveiled their mesmerising interactive 52 Places To Go In 2016 list and only one Australian city made the cut.
While emerging cool hub Adelaide took out the number 24 spot in 2015, this year the prestigious publication is shining a light on our most handsome city – Sydney. Just making the list at number 51 (of the 52 places chosen), the accompanying blurb notes the city’s proclivity for outdoor living as a huge drawcard for travellers, as well as two major urban reclamation projects opening in the past year. The first of these is the new Barangaroo Reserve, which was built on an edge Sydney Harbour that was once piled high with shipping containers. One multi-million dollar facelift later and the site now houses a stunning shoreside promenade that will be home to Copenhagen restaurant Noma for a short residency this summer.
The Goods Line was also praised as a brilliant urban renewal project that saw a disused overland train corridor turned into a new pedestrian and cycle network, passing through Railway Square and Ultimo to Darling Harbour. Another nod was for the Old Clare Hotel in Chippendale, Sydney’s newest and hippest boutique hotel which was built over two heritage-listed buildings and designed to incorporate a tasteful mix of the old and the new. The list also notes that it’s never been easier to get from the US to Australia with Qantas’ newest partnership with American Airlines.

The esteemed list was topped by Mexico City with The New York Times noting the city’s energy as a top-notch reason to visit in 2016. World class cuisine, museums and forward-thinking design have boosted the reputation of this vast and expanding city, which has pipped France’s Bordeaux and Malta at the post to take out the top spot.
