Legendary Musical ‘West Side Story’ Is Coming To Sydney Harbour This Month
This feature is brought to you by Qantas, who are proud to play a part in bringing travellers together with the people they love from around Australia and across the globe.
If there’s a better way to celebrate all that Sydney has to offer than by taking in an iconic musical at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour, we haven’t found it.
West Side Story, the quintessential New York musical, is coming to one of Sydney’s most iconic venues — and if past productions, like Carmen (below), are anything to go by, it’s gonna be big.
If Romeo and Juliet was your favourite Shakespeare classic in high school, this is right up your alley – the musical is a modern-day retelling of the tale of two star-crossed young lovers caught up in rival gangs.
It’s the first musical to play on Opera Australia’s floating harbour stage, but it has all the gravitas of an opera. Lavish set design delivers a slice of West Side New York, complete with graffitied subway cars and a replica of the Statue of Liberty’s torch. And, given Sydney’s reputation as the location of some of the world’s most hotly anticipated pyrotechnic displays, you better believe there’s fireworks at every performance.
“The setting is perfect,” Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini said in a media release. “With the city skyline in the background, you won’t get a better stage backdrop in the world.”
Why not get there early for dinner and a show? Raise a glass as the sun sets over the harbour, before New York takes it over with famous songs like ‘Tonight,’ ‘I Feel Pretty’ and ‘America’.
The production will premiere on the Fleet Steps at Mrs Macquarie’s Point on March 22 and runs until April 21. Tickets for shows on Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday start at $99, while shows on Friday and Saturday start at $123.
