Vivid Sydney is celebrating its 10th year, and has very much become a staple on Sydney’s social calendar – something you need to see in the flesh to truly appreciate.

But with an excess of light-art sculptures, light installations and grand-scale projections to discover, it can be hard to feast your eyes on absolutely everything. So we’ve put together a list of our five favourites you’ve just got to see at this year’s Vivid.

#1 Revive The Reef

So much like all art, a lot of the installations at Vivid have a deeper meaning. This year, Qantas is presenting ‘Revive The Reef‘ – a piece dedicated to showcasing just how beautiful and irreplaceable the Great Barrier Reef is.

Step into a magical underwater landscape and work with friends and strangers to unwind the pressures threatening the Reef. With each turn of the handle on illuminated coral, your surrounds will transform from bleached white to an explosion of different colours.

As you work together with your newfound community to bring life to the Reef, you’ll be immersed in real Reef sounds in an ode to the Great Barrier Reef.

Samsung and Vivid Sydney are inviting Australians on an epic experience through light at sound at this incredible installation.

From the Sydney Opera House forecourt, the installation is an enormous two-storey, nine-shaped labyrinth, fitted with 2km of LED strip lighting.

It will integrate some of the most cutting edge features of Samsung’s mobile technology, including various ‘surprise and delight’ moments for visitors such as Instagram-worthy moments in the super slow-mo booth.

In celebration of their 100 year anniversary, May Gibbs’ iconic and immortal characters, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and their pals will come to life during Vivid Sydney 2018 when they’re projected onto Customs House.

It’s the ultimate trip down memory lane narrated by everyone’s favourite Play School host, Noni Hazlehurst. You can watch Gibbs’ original illustrations of their outback adventures unfold each night.

#4 Skylark

‘Skylark’ is an enormous light show, stretching from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay to the outer areas of the harbour.

It was created by Iain Reed of 32 Hundred Lighting, and incorporates interactive lighting of the bridge and Circular Quay skyscrapers. And this year — in a first for Vivid Sydney — it will incorporate a new, fully interactive custom-built laser, double the strength of any laser ever seen before on Sydney Harbour.
