You Could Earn $600 Just By Finishing This Giant Bowl Of Ramen

Challenge accepted!

While it may look a little different to your traditional working holiday, you could stand to earn almost $600 for just 20 minutes of work on your next trip to Tokyo. How, you ask? All you have to do is finish a bowl of ramen.

It sounds easy enough — until you take into account the fact that the bowl of ramen in question looks, well, like this (note the iPhone for scale):

The monster “mega serving” challenge comes from Umakara Ramen Hyouri and boasts a couple of attractive incentives: challengers who finish the entire bowl in under 20 minutes win ¥50,000 ($AU605), while those who clock in under 30 minutes receive ¥30,000 (AU$363).

Entry costs ¥3000 (AU$36), so confidence is key. Help from friends is obviously out of the question and anyone who fails to keep it down has to, er, cough up a ¥10,000 (AU$121) penalty.

According to My Navi, nine people have completed the challenge since it was introduced in 2013.

That’s all the more impressive by the fact that the bowl holds about four standard servings of ramen noodles, 4kg of bean sprouts and 700ml of broth. Oh, and it’s topped with a solid handful of chilli powder.

Umakara Ramen Hyouri is located at 4-7-19 Kuzitanami in Chiyoda and is open from 11am to 11pm, with last orders at 10:30pm. Reservations are required to take part in the challenge, and should be made by 3pm the previous day.
