Sorry, Tomb Raider’s Japanese Island Doesn’t Exist – But The Reality Is Even Better

For the longest time, movies and TV shows have inspired us to search for the real-life settings of our favourite fictional lands, from South Korea forBlack Panther to Croatia for Game of Thrones and Ireland for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The latest blockbuster to spark the interest of international travellers is the new Tomb Raider film, starring Alicia Vikander as badass Lara Croft.

In fact, people are so keen to follow in Croft’s footsteps that hundreds of fans have been searching for the mythical island of Yamatai, which is supposedly located off the coast of Japan. You can see snippets of it in the trailer above.

But don’t hop on a plane to Japan just yet. You see, the film was actually shot in the Western Cape of South Africa, so that’s the best place to head to if you’re looking for an authentic Tomb Raider experience. And while no single place was used as a filming location for Yamatai, the incredible on-screen scenes are an great indication of the rugged landscape you’ll find in the area.
