This Mountain Cave Looks Like Something From Outer Space

Someone call NASA because this looks like something from outer space.

Thanks to some crazy cool lighting displays, this subterranean waterfall in Chattanooga looks like some otherworldly crater – luckily for us, it’s right here on earth. The underground waterfall Ruby Falls can be found behind the cavernous rock face of Lookout Mountain in the landlocked American state of Tennessee.

This rare phenomenon sees water from the mountaintop fed through an entirely underground waterfall. The falls date back almost 30 million years, and through erosion the stream currently falls almost 350 metres down the cavern. The water then pools on the cave floor, only to be fed through Lookout Mountain and out towards the surrounding Tennessee River.

The spot was found back in the ’20s by a cave exploring chemist and his wife, who subsequently turned the cavernous mountain into a tourist attraction.

Groups can hike through Lookout Mountain’s extensive cave system which takes you through some dramatic rock formations, including some pretty cool stalactites and stalagmites. Strap on your walking boots and get ready to explore like you’re Indiana Jones in search of the Ark of the Covenant – this is a beam of light you can actually look at.
