This Has Got To Be The World’s Chillest Library

The term “beach reads” has taken on a whole new level of (literal) meaning for vacationers to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

There, right on the sand, the Albena beachfront resort has installed an open-air library that offers tourists free access to 2500 books in more than ten languages and every genre imaginable. Resort-goers can browse the shelves in between dips in the water, take books home with them, and leave their own behind for some other lucky traveller.

But not to worry, book lovers – the shelves have been specially designed by German architect Herman Kompernas to resist sun, sand, and salty sea breezes, and in the event of inclement weather, the books themselves are protected by a giant, zippered vinyl covering.

The Albena beachfront library, which already has plans to expand its collection, is one of three beachy bibliothecas in the world, and the first of its kind in the European Union. Go ahead – grab a daiquiri and bury your toes in the sand, secure in the knowledge that yes, you can simultaneously sight-see and catch up on Game of Thrones.
