These Are The Best Cities To Visit If You’re Going It Alone
Spoiler: Mexico's where it's at.
Taking the solo road is satisfying in a number of ways. You have no one to answer to, you get to do what you want, you don’t get painfully annoyed by your travel buddy (it always happens). And to top it all off, travelling solo gives you a sense of independence and confidence.
But there are a lot of things to consider when you’re planning a trip on your own. Are you heading to a social city? Will it be safe? Are there many young people around?
Airbnb did the ground work and figured out which cities are the best to visit if you’re a solo traveller. Here are the top 10 cities to travel to visit if you’re going it alone:
#10 Busan, South Korea
Only two and a half hours from Seoul, Busan is a thriving city but it’s the nearby mountains and sprawling beaches that make it really unique. It’s also a huge sporting hub for national and international teams, so make sure to catch a game.
#9 Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte is going into America’s south without making the plunge. Expect lots of food, sports and the huge student hub at nearby University of North Carolina will draw out lots of young partiers like you.
#8 Mexico City, Mexico
Look no further than Mexico City for a destination brimming with energy and culture. Think world-class museums, exciting food, ancient ruins and the colour. So much colour. The New York Times didn’t dub it a must-visit city for no reason.
#7 Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland is friendly and walkable, with more clean air and outdoor activities than you can fit into one visit. Try not to focus too much on the outside though, Auckland does a damn fine job at arts and culture, too.
#6 Sao Paulo, Brazil
Brazil’s intimidating, bustling hub is the third largest urban centre in the world, with 20 million people moving, chatting, creating and eating in the city every single day. With small theatres, big museums, clubs, cinemas, impressive street art and some of the best restaurants you’ll ever encounter, you’ll never feel lonely in Sao Paulo.
#5 Johannesburg, South Africa
#4 Playa Del Carmen, Mexico
The very trendy Playa Del Carmen is sure to put you in touch with lots of other wandering travellers. Not only does Playa Del Carmen have a great, white sand beach itself but it’s close to other paradises like Tulum if you want to diversify your travels. Bask in the sun on the beach, go snorkelling or join one of the many goings on.
#3 Cologne, Germany
Cologne has got some of the most impressive architecture you’ll see in all of Europe. Marvel at Kölner Dom, serve witness to ancient Roman walls, swig a beer in the Altstadt and learn all about it at one the city’s excellent museums.
#2 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
People abound, fresh food is everywhere and interesting alleys are waiting to be discovered. Ho Chi Min City is a delightful assault on the senses.
#1 Cancun, Mexico
The third Mexican city and number one spot goes to Cancun. Cancun is not only party central, but if you travel outside of the strip you can find an outdoorsy traveller’s dream. Solo travellers will never find a lack of new friends or experiences.
