There’s An Island Full Of Puppies And Yes, You Can Stay There
Perhaps you’ve heard about Japan’s islands filled with cats, Assateague, an island filled with wild ponies in the US, the pig-populated Big Major Cay in the Bahamas. But what about an island filled with adorable puppies?
Welcome to Providenciales, an island in Turks and Caicos, a 40-island archipelago to the south of the Bahamas. The weather is stunning, the water is shimmering blue, and the best part? It’s home to up to 70 rescue puppies every single year.
The work is all thanks to Potcake Place, a non-profit animal charity also based on the island of Providenciales. They aim to not only rescue stray puppies and dogs, but bring them to health and find them happy new homes.
The term ‘potcake’ is the affectionate name given to the many dogs who roam among the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. A mix between Labrador Retriever, English Fox Terrier and German Shepard, according to the official website, the name “came about because the locals fed the caked remains of the cooking pot to the dogs. As generations have passed, Potcakes have evolved into a breed which is extremely smart, loyal and loving”.
As there’s no animal shelter in the area, Potcake Place aims to help people adopt puppies and take them home. Visitors are able to spend time these amazing puppies, take them for walks, to the beach, and so on.
The charity work closely with local vets to nurse sick puppies back to health, as well as ensuring their general wellbeing through vaccinations, worming, etc. They also help adoptive families in any way they can, including health certificates and airport assistance for travelling pups.
Up to 500 potcakes are adopted each year. Even if you aren’t planning to adopt a puppy, the charity still welcomes visitors to spend time with these adorable pups, even if it’s just for a couple of hours.
