There’s A NYC Florist Arranging Flowers In Unexpected Places

Do you remember flash mobs? The popular social experiment favoured by uni students and activists circa 2009? Well, if you’ve been thinking that we’re well overdue for 2017’s version of the Flash Mob, then you’re in luck.

Flash flowers are popping up all over New York City and they are perfect.

Lewis Miller of Lewis Miller Design began the “random act of flowers” at the John Lennon Memorial in Central Park back in October. He admitted that gifting flowers to the people of New York is something he’s always wanted to do: “We have created many lavish and memorable events for our wonderful clients that not only stay with them and their guests for years to come but have also left a smile and an impression on us over the years.” As such, his desire is to “recreate just a sliver of that sentiment and offer it up to the city dwellers and tourists of this great city.” I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Following the success of the John Lennon memorial flowers, Miller continued his Flower Flashes all over the city. They popped up at the Alice in Wonderland statue, the Love sculpture and in random rubbish bins hugging the sidewalks. Lovely, Instagrammable bursts of joyous flowers.

Speaking to Vogue, Lewis Miller spoke about the act of flowers brightening up someone’s day: “Who doesn’t love to get flowers? They are such a luxury, and New York City is a very gritty, fast-paced town. If we can bring nature—something wild and sumptuous—to New Yorkers and make them smile, the way people smile when they witness a random act of kindness, then that is a great thing.”

Getting up at the crack of dawn and arranging the flowers before the rest of the city wakes up for the day requires a huge level of commitment from Miller and his team. To maintain the mystery and surprise, they don’t release the location of the Flower Flashes and rely solely on social media for the word to spread. Much more fun.

Imagine walking down the street and seeing a bright collection of sunflowers poking out of gritty crevices and making them that much happier? That’s way better than a bunch of people freezing for 30 seconds or more, imo.
