The World’s First Underground Park Is Coming To NYC

New York has always been good at all things underground (thanks for subways and Lou Reed, NYC!) and now, one of New York’s best parks, The High Line, is getting an underground counterpart.

The High Line – a two and a half kilometre long elevated park with amazing views of the city – is a must-see when travelling to NYC. It opened in 2009 and locals and tourists alike loved its innovation and aesthetic prowess. Now, an underground version is opening up in an unused trolley station.

The one-acre lot, which will be known as the Lowline, is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and is at the forefront of technology as it seeks to answer the question: how can we make cities greener?

The proposed solar technology involves the creation of a “remote skylight.” That means that sunlight passes through a glass shield that reflects and gathers at one focal point, and is then directed to the entire underground park.

The garden will be free and open to the public and is set to open officially in 2021 however you can already visit the Lowline Lab – a long-term open laboratory and technical exhibit designed to test and showcase how the Lowline will look.

The Lab, which is also free to visit, will be open from October 2015 until March 2017, so make sure to stop in for a squiz at the future on your next New York jaunt.
