The New Qantas Entertainment System Is Actually Virtual Reality

What’s that up ahead? It looks like…oh it IS. It’s Qantas warmly greeting us from the FUTURE. The company have partnered with Samsung to provide a trial entertainment service that gives customers a 360° interactive 3D experience via advanced virtual reality in the next few months.

Oh, me? I’m just taking a moment to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And you?

In a one-of-a-kind world first, passengers with access to the Samsung VR headsets will be able to lie back, push a button and be shifted into a different reality from the comfort of their seat, 40,000 feet in the air. Travellers will be able to preview the sights of network destinations, for example a special 3D experience from Kakadu National Park or the soaring heights of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb. They will be able to experience original Qantas products and content, like taking a virtual tour through the new Qantas First Lounge in LA or experiencing an A380 landing from the tarmac. Or, for the more traditional, they can immerse themselves in their favourite Hollywood blockbusters as though they were watching it in a cinema.

The trial will run for three months to assess customer feedback and the Samsung VR headsets will be featured in the First Class Lounge in Sydney and Melbourne from mid-February. They’ll also be available on select A380 flights between Australia and Los Angeles in the First Class cabin from mid-March. Click here for more info. Check out Qantas flights here.
