The 7 Best Things To Do In Perth This April
A beach barbecue, an inaugural street party and a 'food truck rumble'.
So summer is officially over, your tan is fading slowly but ever so surely, and you’ve even slept a night without the air-conditioner on. However, it doesn’t mean that there is any less to do. Here are seven things to keep you preoccupied in Perth this April.
#1 Eat Drink Perth
Now in its twelfth year, Eat Drink Perth has established itself as the event on Perth’s culinary calendar. Clear your schedule and work up an appetite because this six-week foodie festival will fill up your weekends (and bellies) with markets, masterclasses and morsel after morsel of delectable eats. Get ready to rumble at the Food Truck Rumble in the Urban Orchard, enjoy a progressive dinner prepared by some of Perth’s finest chefs, take on the meatball challenge at Lalla Rookh, and feast on yum cha in the park. Your stomach will thank you later.
#2 In the Pines Festival
RTRFM’s institutional festival, In the Pines, is returning on Sunday April 24 with 20 local bands playing across two stages in the atmospheric setting of UWA’s Somerville Auditorium. This year’s line-up sees an eclectic mix of artists across all music genres and is a great opportunity to keep tabs on who is up and coming on the Perth music scene. To put it in context: Tame Impala, Jebediah, The Sleepy Jackson, Eskimo Joe, The Panics, Pond and San Cisco have all played this festival in the past. Get together with a group of mates, settle back and enjoy the tunes, and prepare for some major bragging rights when you’ll be able to say that you saw [insert name of future superstar] before they were huge.
#3 Ben and Jerry’s Openair Cinema
It will be a long time before we tire of outdoor cinemas and thanks to Perth’s well-behaved weather gods, the odds are that your film session won’t end up being cancelled. Ben and Jerry’s Openair Cinema returns this year to Riverside Drive delivering a solid program of recent blockbusters, cult classics and family favourites. Head along to a ‘Sundae Session’ which has the unbeatable combination of film, live music and wait for it… free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream! They certainly know how to cater to their audience. The season runs until April 24.
#4 Subiaco Street Party
Hands up if you love a good street party? Well, we sure do, and so does the City of Subiaco, which is hosting its inaugural boutique street festival the Subiaco Street Party on Saturday April 23. The festival will take place on Rokeby Road between Hay and Barker Street and will also spill down adjacent laneways. There will be live music and performances, street food and pop-up bars, markets and overall merriment – come on down so that you don’t miss out on all of the neighbourly fun. Naw.
#5 Beach BBQ at the J-shed
If you are one of those souls who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, then make your way down to the Beach BBQ at the J-shed in Freo. Here you can pretend that summer hasn’t really left as you knock back an icy cold brew while looking out at the spectacular Indian Ocean all the while listening to beats being spun by a local DJ behind you. Of course, you’re also there for the BBQ and you won’t be disappointed with what’s on offer. Bonus: it’s all being served up alongside a winning selection of craft brews and cocktails. Beach BBQ sessions happen on Sundays from 4pm to 9pm until May.
#6 Innovation month
April is Innovation Month in Perth and this annual festival is now in its fifth year. Celebrating creative ideas and inquisitiveness, this year’s festival has curated a program designed to expand your knowledge in areas such as science, technology, health and wellbeing, cinema and more, through workshops, panel sessions, interactive events and screenings. Join in on a projector bike ride though the streets of Perth at night time, pick up a zine at the Fresh Prints Market Fair, find out how to make your own sensors and circuits, or learn how to make your own flower crown. Who knows? You may even think of your own creative innovation that will change life as we know it.
#7 Alliance Francaise French Film Festival
Oh la la! For all of the Francophiles out there or those looking for a dose of culture, run along to the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival, which is on until April 7 – so, literally, run! You can always expect some quirkiness from French films and certainly a whole lot of je ne sais quoi – peruse the program to see which film takes your fancy or check out the winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival, Dheepan. Films are screening at the Cinema Paradiso, Luna on SX and the Windsor.
