Calling All Plant Parents: The City Of Sydney Is Giving Away Thousands Of Free Trees

One of the golden rules of life is this: Just when you think you have enough plants in your home, you should double it. So if, like me, you find yourself trying to fill the empty void in your life with indoor plants, then do we have good news for you: The City Of Sydney is planning a huge plant giveaway!

It’s all part of an attempt by the city to beautify the local area. So on Saturday, March 28, City of Sydney residents will be able to descend on Sydney Park in Alexandria, where the local council is giving away 1000 free trees.

You’ll also be able to pick up a sausage sizzle, and chat to some plant experts who will teach you how to keep your new baby alive. The City has also prepared this handy tip sheet to teach you how to grow trees in pots.

You can choose from 24 varieties that will work in any home, whether you’ve only got a small space in a sharehouse or you’ve got a backyard that’s just craving some some plant cover. You can choose from larger trees, like jacarandas, water gums and cheese trees (which sounds amazing tbh) to something more manageable, like a camelia, banksia, bottlebrush or hibiscus.

Staff will be at Sydney Park from 10am until all trees have been given away — so get in quick, it’s first come, first served. You need to be a City of Sydney resident to be eligible for the plant giveaway, so don’t forget to bring your ID to prove your current address. Each eligible household is entitled to up to 2 free trees, before they run out. The event is popular and parking is limited, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

To score a free tree, you’ll need to live in one of the following suburbs: Alexandria, Annandale, Barangaroo, Beaconsfield, Camperdown, Centennial Park, Chippendale, Darlinghurst, Darlington, Dawes Point, Elizabeth Bay, Erskineville, Eveleigh, Forest Lodge, Glebe, Haymarket, Millers Point, Moore Park, Newtown, Paddington, Potts Point, Pyrmont, Redfern, Rosebery, Rushcutters Bay, St Peters, Surry Hills, Sydney, The Rocks, Ultimo, Waterloo, Woolloomooloo and Zetland.
