‘Tis The Season: 5 Sydney Markets For All Your Christmas Shopping Needs

The Grounds of Alexandria at Christmas

Tomorrow is December 1, which means we’re right on track to start panicking about all that Christmas shopping we’ve been avoiding for the past 11 months.

Fortunately, Sydney is home to a number of excellent markets that make life easier for those with a penchant for leaving it all to the last minute, shopping for loved ones with very specific taste, or just looking to treat themselves.

If you’re already a Sydneysider or plan on visiting for the festive season, we got you.

#1 Christmas Gin Market

Happening for the first time in 2017, the Christmas Gin Market is basically a gift in itself. Held at Sydney city speakeasy The Barbershop, events on December 7 and 14 will be hosted by gin expert Elly Baxter, with a host of gin-centric gifts on offer.

There’ll be handcrafted gin-filled chocolates from Treat Dreams, gin-based marmalade from Four Pillars, and gin-scented grooming products from Enright’s Original Gin, among others, for all the gin-drinkers in your life. Entry is free.

When: 6pm to 9pm, December 7 and 14, 2017

Where: The Barbershop, 89 York Street, Sydney

#2 The Finders Keepers Market

Featuring trinkets, art works and knick-knacks from more than 200 independent artists and designers, The Finders Keepers Market is on the move to The Cutaway at Barangaroo Reserve this year. There’s so much on offer, you might just get all your Christmas shopping done in one fell swoop.

And you can make a day of it, with live music, two bars, two coffee carts and a fleet of mouth-watering food trucks all on site. Entry costs $2 per person.

When: 5pm to 10pm on Friday, December 8, 10am to 7pm on Saturday December 9, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday, December 10, 2017

Where: The Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve, Hickson Road, Barangaroo

#3 Super Furry Festive Market

Do us a favour and cut anyone who says your pets don’t need Christmas presents out of your life. You don’t need that kind of negativity, especially during the festive season.

The Santa’s Little Helper to the annual Super Furry Festival, the Super Furry Festive Market is an essential Christmas shopping stop for anyone with a four-legged love in their life.

Pods 4 Pets, Missy & Me, FurFresh, Paddo Pets and Haus of Harley Dogwear will all be slinging their wares alongside a stacked program of pet-friendly events and activities, like a Christmas-themed doggy fashion show and Santa photo booth. Entry is free.

Where: Shannon Reserve, Crown Street, Surry Hills

When: 9am to 3pm, Saturday December 9, 2017

This one’s for the foodies. The folks over at Porteno, everyone’s favourite rockabilly Argentinean barbecue restaurant, are throwing their first-ever Christmas market this year, and it’s as much about the eating as it is about the shopping.

Wares from a bunch of local artists and designers will be on offer alongside edible gift packs from the likes of LP’s Quality Meats and Continental Deli. And you couldn’t pay a visit to Porteno without indulging a little yourself: eats will be available from the on-site kitchen, along with coffee from the crew at 212 Blu and cocktails from Gardel’s Bar.

Entry is a gold coin donation, with all proceeds donated to the Westmead Children’s Hospital.

When: 10am to 5pm, Sunday December 3, 2017

Where: Porteno, 358 Cleveland Street, Surry Hills

#5 The Grounds Of Alexandria Christmas Market

One of the most Instagrammed spots in Sydney (and with good reason), the folks at the impossibly photogenic Grounds of Alexandria have expanded their regular market offering to a week-long Christmas market boasting everything from monogrammed leather goods to skincare products.

And the best part is that there will be charity gift-wrapping stations on site to ensure that every last detail is taken care of. With all that spare time, you can register to join a Christmas cake-decorating class on December 13 or 14 or get a photo with Santa between December 14 and 24.

When: Monday, December 18 to Sunday, December 24, 2017

Where: The Grounds of Alexandria, Building 7A, 2 Huntley Street, Alexandria

Happy shopping!
