Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Is Gearing Up To Perform Studio Ghibli’s Film Scores

Anime fans, get excited, because the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has just announced a two-night-only performance of the most iconic film scores from beloved Japanese film company, Studio Ghibli.

All your favourite musical moments from director Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films will be brought to life, live in concert.

Making it an extra special event, Miyazaki’s collaborator and composer for more than 30 years, Joe Hisaishi, will conduct the orchestra, in what is the very first performance of the show outside of Japan.

Hisaishi will lead performances of Ghibli classics like My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away.

In a media release, Japan’s consul-general Kazuyoshi Matsunaga  praised the upcoming performances as a high point of Melbourne’s upcoming arts calendar.

“These performances will be the perfect way to showcase Japanese culture here in Victoria,” says Matsunaga. “The works of Studio Ghibli and Mr Hisaishi’s iconic scores are already known and loved throughout Australia, and I know this will be a highlight of Melbourne’s cultural calendar this autumn.”

It’s set to be a show to remember, brilliantly combining both traditional Japanese and western culture.

Tickets go on sale Monday, February 12 and can be purchased online.
