Studio Ghibli’s Newest Movie Is Officially Coming To Australia In 2021, So Things Are Looking Up
Looks like next year is already shaping up to be 1000 times better than 2020 (and yes ok, it’s a pretty low bar), thanks to the announced Australian release date of Studio Ghibli’s newest film Earwig and the Witch (in English, obviously).
The movie, also known as Aya and the Witch tells the story of a an orphan who discovers magic while living with a selfish witch. It’s actually another one based on a novel by British author Diana Wynne Jones (she also wrote the very popular Howl’s Moving Castle and sequel Castles In The Air, and just happens to be my favourite childhood author AND my gateway into Ghibli, but enough about me).

It’s directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son Goro Miyazaki, who was also behind Tales from Earthsea and From Up On Poppy Hill (for the die-hard Ghibli fans playing along at home). It’s also the very first Ghibli film to be completely made by using computer animation, rather than the trademark illustrations — which I’m sure there will be mixed feelings about.
It’ll be distributed in Australia by Madman Entertainment, who as you can see above, have indicated that the release date will be early next year, although an exact date hasn’t been announced yet, probably because 2020 showed that nothing is set in stone.
“Here is the official poster for the new #StudioGhibli film #EarwigAndTheWitch,” reads their Instagram post, “Directed by Goro Miyazaki. Coming to Australian cinemas early 2021.
It’s a nice little interlude for anyone missing their Japan trip (but here’s the perfect itinerary for when you can go back again, you’re welcome), and just movies in general. Honestly, cinemas? I don’t know her.
Of course, you can also head to the studio’s YouTube page for a walk through of the popular Studio Ghibli Museum in Mitaka.
