This Aussie-Owned LA Cafe Is Taking Fairy Bread Mainstream

Fairy Bread

Australian coffee is having a moment in Los Angeles, and one Aussie-owned café has kicked things up a notch, putting everyone’s favourite childhood party food, fairy bread, on the menu.

Opening in February, the adorably named Roo café is in Silverlake, just around the corner from the bright lights of Hollywood, and is owned by Brisbane transplants Elyse Goyen and Tom and Kate O’Conner of Future Fantasic.

The café’s design is all terrazzo and millennial pink, but it’s the addition of our national snack (don’t fight me on this) that has tongues wagging.

While it’s traditionally made using white bread, a slathering of butter and as many Hundreds and Thousands as you can get to stick, Roo’s fairy bread is slightly more upmarket: it’s made using a substantial slice of sourdough layered with mascarpone cheese, melted butter, and lashings of sprinkles.

Beautifully plated café fare like house-made bircher museli, avo toast, and poached eggs appear on the menu alongside uniquely Aussie brews like piccolos and flat whites. There’s also a selection of sweet and healthy smoothies aimed at those on the go.
