The First Three Acts From The 2018 Sydney Festival Line-Up Have Dropped

Aquasonic

Always a highlight on Sydney‘s ever-evolving cultural calendar, just like that, it’s time to get hyped for next year’s Sydney Festival. Festival bosses have today dropped the first three performances from what’s shaping up to be a killer 2018 line-up.

New from acclaimed experimental theatre collective The Wooster Group is The Town Hall Affair, a reimagining of Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker’s 1971 documentary Town Bloody Hall, which captured an unruly debate between author Noman Mailer and renowned feminists Germaine Greer (played by ER‘s Maura Tierney) and Jill Johnston, among others. A combination of verbatim dialogue and video footage, The Town Hall Affair simultaneously brings life to the debate and “derails” it.

It’ll show at the Sydney Opera House’s Drama Theatre from January 7 to 13, at 8pm nightly. Tickets cost between $86 and $96.

RIOT variety show

Blending high art and “trash culture”, RIOT is an acclaimed Irish variety show that’s part party, part politics. Drag queen and activitst Panti Bliss, comedic acrobats Lords of Strut, and former Riverdance leads Up and Over It all make an appearance, meaning there’s something for literally anyone.

RIOT will set up shop at the Meriton Festival Village between January 5 and 28, and costs between $70 and $80 per person.

Finally, and perhaps most impressively, Aquasonic is exactly what it sounds ike: an “ethereal underwater concert performed by five musicians submerged in aquariums”. The product of years of research by ensemble Between Music, Aquasonic‘s musicians play custom-made instruments and even sing underwater.
