Rex Is Offering Some Healthy Competition To The Syd-Melb Flight Path With $79 Fares

Regional airline Rex (Regional Express) is taking on the big guns by adding flights between Sydney and Melbourne to its roster, starting with $79 one-way flights for takeoff from March 1, 2021 – but you can buy them from today.

Offering some much-needed competition to this major route, travellers can now fly between our two major cities for a fraction of the usual cost, with the airline promising 100,000 fares at this $79 one-way promotional price. Rex plans to offer nine return flights between these two cities, daily.

This is the first time Rex will be flying commercially between Sydney and Melbourne, a move that marks its planned expansion to service capital cities. It’s great news for Australians, who’ve essentially been living under a duopoly on air travel.

Rex Deputy Chairman, the Hon. John Sharp AM said this move marks a historic new era for Australia’s domestic air travel, bridging the gap between premium service and low-cost pricing.

“We will be offering premium full service with our trademark country hospitality, but at fares pegged at the budget carrier level,” Sharp said in a statement.

That means all fares will come with the same perks as flying with other major airlines — like pre-assigned seating, checked baggage, hospitality services and online check-in. Plus country hospitality, you guys – major win.

If you need more, Sharp said eight business class seats will be available on the Sydney to/from Melbourne route.

The expansion has been made possible by Virgin Airlines (RIP) who went into administration in April. This allowed Rex to lease three of Virgin’s Boeing 737s. Another two aircraft will arrive by Easter, when Rex plans to add Brisbane to its network. If all goes well, other capital cities are in their sights.

“If all things go as planned, we hope to grow our fleet to 8-10 by the end of 2021,” Sharp explained.
