Qantas’ New Virtual Reality App Lets You Travel Australia Without Leaving Your Seat

Ever wanted to test drive a trip before you went on it? Well Qantas’ new VR app is letting you do just that.

The application, which is available now, showcases some of Australia’s most famous landscapes through a series of immersive 360° videos.

Fancy a trip to the Northern Territory? Now you can experience Bruce Munro’s huge Field of Light installation, take a helicopter ride over Uluru, relax on a sunset river cruise at Yellow Water Billabong, experience a guided tour of Australian Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr and swim in the water holes at Maguk and Gunlom Falls – all from the comfort of the very chair you’re sitting on.

If beach trips are more your vibe, head to sunny Queensland for a Hamilton Island escape, where you can fly with the pilots in the cockpit of a Qantas jet as it lands at the airport, relax at the luxe-as Qualia resort, swim in the Great Barrier Reef, enjoy a helicopter tour and sail to Whitehaven Beach.

You can also experience the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb and Vivid Sydney, the Festival of Lights, Music and Ideas.

The app – which is available for iPhone, Android, Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive devices – offers two modes: split screen for those who have a compatible headset or Google Cardboard and 2D landscape for viewing directly on a smartphone. If inspiration strikes, users can book Qantas flights to the featured destinations right there in the app.
