The Movies, Music & TV Shows Travellers Couldn’t Get Enough Of On Qantas Flights This Year
This feature is brought to you by Qantas, who are proud to play a part in bringing travellers together with the people they love from around Australia and across the globe.
When you think about it, there’s not a whole lot to do on planes – especially if you don’t score the window seat. So, it’s no surprise that Aussies consume a heap of media when they’re high in the sky.
Qantas has given us the inside scoop on the top movies, shows and music consumed through in-flight entertainment in 2018, and to be honest, there’s a couple of surprises in there. Join us as we find out what Qantas fliers were hooked on this year.
Top 10 Feature Films
- Mission: Impossible – Fallout
- Crazy Rich Asians
- Ocean’s 8
- Kingsman: The Golden Circle
- Black Panther
- Justice League
- Blade Runner 2049
- Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!
- Avengers: Infinity War
- Red Sparrow
Fliers sure enjoyed their action films and thrillers this year. Mission: Impossible – Fallout copped a whopping 12 percent of all views on in-flight entertainment in its first month, which is wild, considering there’s over 250 movies to choose from.
Four of the top 10 films (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8, Red Sparrow, Mamma Mia: Here WeGo Again) featured female leads, and both of Chris Hemsworth’s 2018 offerings (unsurprisingly) made the list as well. Oddly enough, despite making the seventh spot, three-hour epic Blade Runner 2049 was the second most-skipped movie, with Isle of Dogs being the most-skipped, with 52 percent of viewers stopping halfway through. Ouch.
Top 5 TV Box Sets
I guess it makes sense that the most-consumed boxsets are either a) intense dramas or b) intense dramas with hunky dudes. What better way to zone out a long-haul flight than watching all 41 episodes of Riverdale in one sitting?
Alongside Westworld and Brittania, otherworldly fictional dramas were the most enjoyed genre on flights this year.
Top 5 TV Comedies
- Modern Family
- The Big Bang Theory
- Young Sheldon
- Family Guy
- American Dad
Lots of fliers sought out chuckles to pass the time this year, with two of the planet’s longest-running TV series landing in the top five alongside two of the longest-running animated shows. The relatively new Young Sheldon makes a surprising addition, though I guess it makes sense – a long-haul flight is the best time to go deep on The Big Bang Theory lore.
- Ariana Grande, ‘Dangerous Woman’
- Ariana Grande, ‘Side To Side’
- Ariana Grande, ‘Into You’
- Chainsmokers, ‘The One’
Wow, so you guys really love Ariana Grande, huh? Not only have you listened to enough Ariana Grande to have her tracks take out three of the top four spots, you listened to her 2016 album so much that it’s been on the list for two years running. If I had my druthers, I’d say Sweetener is the only thing likely to take the top spot next year.
Speaking of, you might be wondering what the most-played album is. Turns out it’s a little something called Peaceful Piano, a compilation of ambient piano music. Coming second is the languidly titled Nature Spirit: A Journey into Magical and Relaxing Forest Sounds, followed by ABBA’s Gold album (I suspect that might have something to do with the highly anticipated release of Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again), and then Grande with Dangerous Woman.
I mean, it makes sense – if piano or nature sounds can’t get you to sleep, you might as well spend your remaining time in the air listening to ‘Mamma Mia’ and then ‘God Is A Woman’ back-to-back. It is the most powerful music combo known to man, after all.
