This Quirky Tourist Attraction Is Officially The Quietest Place On Earth
Are you sick of the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Looking for the ultimate in peace and quiet?
Well, look no further than the Orfield Laboratories anechoic chamber in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which has been dubbed the quietest place on earth. It’s so quiet that, back in 2005, it made it into the Guinness World Records when a reading of minus 2.5 decibels was recorded inside.
Ever since then, visitors have flocked from all corners of the globe to experience true silence, and the reviews are… mixed. Members of the public need to book a tour to visit the room, and are only allowed to stay for a short and supervised time. Most people leave within half of the allotted time, tortured by the eerie sounds of their own heart beat, lungs and even stomach.
While that might seem a little gross (or cool, depending on where you stand) the silence can actually benefit some. Owner of the Orfield Laboratories, Steve Orfield, told Lonely Planet how silence can be therapeutic for people with conditions like autism and post-traumatic stress disorder, among others.
