NYC Streets To Close; To Be Replaced By A Giant Playground

Is there really anything better than a NYC street party? Well, maybe one that involves a huge waterslide.

Manhattan’s Summer Streets is back for 2016, bringing with it some much needed chill to NYC’s swelteringly hot summer. Held on the first three consecutive Saturdays in August, almost 11 kilometres of New York City’s streets will be blocked off to traffic, letting the public play, run, walk and bike ’til their heart’s content.

Summer Streets celebrates NYC’s most valuable public space – its streets – which are often blanketed by cars, trucks, cabbies and buses on any given day of the week. This initiative encourages healthy recreation and provides space for New Yorkers (and lucky tourists) to see a different side of the city. Last year saw almost 300,000 people out and about – and this year they’re taking things up a notch.

Held between the hours of 7am and 1pm, there will be five different locations for the summer street party: Uptown, Midtown, Astor Place, Soho and Foley Square. Activities include a nine-metre tall zipline, an interactive dog park, free fitness classes, walking tours, bike tours, food stalls, an art party and of course, a giant inflatable beach slide, located at Foley Square. Registration is necessary for some activities, otherwise you can just come along for some free time in the sun.
