A NSW Town Is Throwing A Festival Of Mullets

Have you ever wondered where the humble mullet was born? The people of Kurri Kurri on the NSW Central Coast haven’t – they’re confident Australia’s national hairstyle** was created in their hometown.

Now, they’re throwing a festival to celebrate it.

Mulletfest will take place at the Chelmsford Hotel on February 24 and will dish out awards in five categories – best everyday mullet, grubbiest mullet, best ranga (redhead) mullet, best ladies’ mullet, and best junior mullet – along with an overall winner. Entertainment will be provided by pub-rock band The Stunned Mullets, obviously.

Fortunately, if you’re sporting a business-at-the-front, party-at-the-back look, you don’t need to be a Kurri Kurri local to be in the running. People from all over Australia have reportedly already entered.

Mulletfest is the brainchild of local hairdresser Laura Hawkins.

“The mullet scene is very strong here,” Hawkins told AAP. “We’ve already have 50 entries. There’s such a variety: there are there hardcore, tough mullets, but also the coiffed, well-cared-for kind.”
