This New Food Delivery Service Is Reducing Restaurant Commission Fees, So Get Your Orders In

At a time when all I’ve wanted to do is order in most nights, or at least some of them, to support local restaurants and cafes while still keeping to lockdown rules, the ridiculous commission fees most delivery services add on top make it hard to justify. You want to support the local business after all, not the giant app.

Enter Mr Yum. Instead of the typical 30-35% commission added by large delivery apps, this localised hero takes only 4.5%.

“As you’ve seen a lot in the press, [charging those fees] is unsustainable, especially when it’s not incremental revenue (because the restaurants aren’t open for dine-in),” explained Mr Yum CEO and cofounder Kim Teo to Broadsheet. “It’s been awesome to see customers becoming more aware of [those] unsustainable fees and ordering direct.”

Having already established themselves in the Melbourne suburbs of Collingwood, Fitzroy, Prahan and South Yarra, Mr Yum is now opening for Sydney‘s Surry Hills and Darlinghurst suburbs.

The idea is to keep expanding as more businesses sign up to the service, connecting their delish food with the hungry masses. As they join, the app creates a new ‘cluster’ and adds their suburb.

“The cluster pages are an easy way for customers who want to support local to find out who is still doing takeaway and easily place an order,” Teo said. “The first cluster we launched three weeks ago now has 50-plus venues, and the one we launched two weeks ago has 25 venues. They really do gain momentum amongst locals.”

It’s Friday, so you may as well start your oder tonight, right? You can find all the restaurants and download the app here.

If you’re a Brisbane local feeling left out, don’t worry. Bopple is a similar service with only 5.9% fee, as is based in Brisbane, now expanding to Sydney.

It’s a good time to feel too lazy to cook!
