Moulin Rouge! The Musical Is Coming To Australia
Moulin Rouge! The Musical will premiere in Australia in 2021, with the show finding its new home in Melbourne.
The news was dropped by Moulin Rouge creator Baz Luhrmann, his wife and the movie’s costume designer Catherine Martin and the Victorian Premier Dan Andrews on social media. “Moulin Rouge’s Australian premier will be in Melbourne, the theatre capital of our nation,” said Andrews in the announcement.
The musical follows the same story as the 2001 film (starring our very own Nicole Kidman, big mood) of Christian, a young poet who falls in love with Satine, the star of the Moulin Rogue cabaret theatre. They start a secret romance, forced to hide because Satine has been promised to a wealthy Duke in return for funding for the theatre’s next show. But Satine is hiding another secret from the Duke and from Christian, and this secret is fatal.
The soundtrack will feature hit songs from the original movie, like an onstage rendition of Lady Marmalade, as well as a monstrous 70-something new songs from Beyonce, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and OutKast.
The musical made its debut on Broadway last week to rave reviews. Considering we had to wait years for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Hamilton to come to our shores, this early announcement about the Australian production is the literal definition of a pleasant surprise.
It will open in the Regent Theatre following a $14.9 million renewal. The works include improvements to the bar and foyer, repairs to the building’s original ’60s facade and extra seating.
