Taronga Zoo welcomed little wombat joey Waru earlier this year – his name translates to ‘fire’ in several Indigenous Australian dialects.

After he tragically lost his mother to a rare fungal infection, Waru is being hand-raised at Taronga Zoo Sydney – his best chance at survival given joeys of his age are usually still developing inside their mum’s pouch. Taronga keepers have been providing 24/7 care for little Waru, and he’s developing well, as you can see in the above video update.
