London’s Getting A Super Cool Floating Park

A new oasis of green is headed to London’s Paddington Basin in the form of a floating “pocket park”.

Plans for a floating park have just been approved by Westminster Council, who have given the go ahead to build a 730-square-metre platform over Grand Union Canal in Paddington Basin, a small canal basin located in the London suburb of Paddington.

The floating park is set to open in spring and feature open lawns and Tibetan cherry trees. It has densely planted raised borders, communal seating and even a series of decked platforms and walkways that float over the water.

Move over the High Line, this might just be the world’s coolest inner city escape.

The space will have Wi-Fi, programmable water, a light maze and be open all-year-round until dusk. Along the canal there’ll be boat mooring opportunities for boat-based traders to sell food and drinks. Dubbed a “pocket park” by developers, it will also feature an events and installation venue and a small reserve for wildfowl, which is off limits to humans.
