London Could Be Getting The Ultimate David Bowie Memorial
Since the death of the great David Bowie in January 2016, the world has grieved in a number of creative and beautiful ways. Tributes have poured from everywhere including Sydney to Texas to Berlin. But they’ve left it up to London, the birthplace of the legend himself, to execute the coolest tribute of all.
A crowdfunding campaign has kicked off in England to fund a giant lightning bolt statue in homage to Bowie’s album Aladdin Sane. The statue was designed by the artist collective This Ain’t Rock’n’Roll and has since been endorsed by Bowie’s official website too.
The three storey blue and red stainless steel lightening bolt is anticipated to live opposite the Brixton tube station, which is just five streets away from Stansfield Road where Bowie was born. Brixton is proud to be the birthplace of the music legend and as the crowding funding page reads, “When David Bowie died, Brixton lost a son.”
“Just as an otherworldly David Bowie landed in our lives, the (is it too soon to call it the ZiggyZag?) stands embedded in the Brixton pavement—a three-story-tall bolt from above.” They continued to describe the artwork in the same fashion, “A nine meter missive from another dimension, hurled from afar.”
The local council of Lambeth has endorsed the artwork too.
The campaign needs to raise approximately AUD$1.6 million (GBP 990,000) in order to go ahead and they’re already at AUD$63,548 of that. Pledges will receive gifts according to number, including books, t shirts or a lightening flash print.
