Google Map’s New AR Live View Will Help You Explore A New City Without Getting Lost

I don’t know about you, but I literally can’t do anything without my phone. One time it broke at a bar and I straight up didn’t know how to get home, so I can only imagine what it’d be like to get stuck without your phone in a new city. Good news for all us phone tragics — Google Maps recently launched Live View, a new feature that will drastically change the way we get from A to B.

Live View uses augmented reality to show you arrows, directions and street names over a live view of your surroundings.

Live View Is Google Maps' New Augmented Reality Navigation Feature

The new augmented reality navigation will literally point you in the right direction. It’s perfect for when a map or a list of directions just don’t cut it!

To use Live View, just put your destination into Google Maps and make sure you’re look at the Walking directions. You’ll see the option to start Live View next to the Start button. Make sure you’re outside in a well-lit area for the best results, because it uses your phone’s camera to show you the directions. Then go on your merry way!

Whether you’re right in the middle of New York or exploring Osaka’s bustling streets, Live View will give you directions in the real world to help guide your way.

Live View is available in all locations where Street View is available, on all phones with ARCore (Google’s augmented reality platform) or ARKit (Apple’s version). Check out the full list of enabled devices to find out if you can use Live View on your next trip.

It’s the latest way Google makes travel easier than ever — here’s how Google Assistant can help you plan your whole holiday.
