Inside Holey Moley, Sydney’s New Mini-Golf Cocktail Bar

Most grown-ups don’t need much to be satisfied. In fact, add alcohol to their favourite childhood pastimes and they’ll be happy as Larry.

That’s exactly what’s gone down at Newtown’s former Social Club: the two-storey establishment has been transformed into a licenced mini-golf course-slash-cocktail bar after the much-loved live-music venue closed in April 2016.

The Holey Moley concept was dreamt up by Funlab, owner of Strike Bowling Bars and SkyZone, and features a novelty sized 18-hole course over the building’s two stories. They spent 18 months perfecting the intricate fit-out, with complex obstacles installed at every turn.

Pop-culture references abound, with a GoT-inspired Iron Throne made from golf clubs and a picture-perfect replica of the iconic Simpsons couch.

It’s also a little bit political, with a play on Donald Trump’s “Make America great again” campaign slogan and a rude representation of the President himself, known as The Ass Hole.

Other obstacles are equally creatively named, with the former hotel’s stage preserved as the Stage Dive Hole and the Elvis-themed Ain’t Nothin’ Putt A Hound Dog Hole.

All manner of sugar-laden drinks are available at the on-site Caddyshack Bar, like the Happy Gilmoreo (Chambord, vodka, Baileys, milk, chocolate sauce and crushed Orees, $18) and the Sugar Caddy (vodka, Blue Curacao, lemonade and a dash of raspberry, $16).

There are also bites like Margherita and pepperoni woodfired pizza ($12) available from the bar for when you’ve worked up an appetite, but there’s also an on-site snack bar called Take A Bao, which serves up six types of steamed buns and Asian-inspired eats like waffle fries with miso mayonnaise.

Holey Moley courses are already open in Melbourne and Brisbane, with a new addition to open in Adelaide on August 3. It’s open between 12pm and midnight, Monday to Friday, and 10am to midnight on weekends from today in Newtown.

Entry starts at $16.50 per person for nine holes. Bookings aren’t essential, but you could be pushing your luck if you wing it.
