Vegan IKEA Meatballs Are Coming Because The World Is Good And Kind

The best thing about a trip to IKEA is ordering the meatballs afterwards, and if you disagree then I hate to break it to you, but you are wrong. And now vegans around the world can join in this post-shopping luxury, because the Swedish furniture giant is now serving up new plant-based vegan meatballs.

IKEA’s vegan meatball is being tested in select stores now, and come 2020 they’ll be served up around the world to the delight of hungry, plant-based shoppers.

The new meatless meatballs mark the latest effort by the Swedish flatpack furniture company to expand its sustainable plant-based food options. They’ll be made from imitation meat that looks and tastes like the real deal, and come after the launch of veggie meatballs in 2015.

IKEA’s traditional meatballs are served with cream sauce, mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. There’s no word yet on what vegan alternatives will be served with the new meatballs, but IKEA is excited to bring this new dining option to stores globally.

“We know that the IKEA meatballs are loved by the many people and for years the meatballs have been the most popular dish in our restaurants,” said Michael La Cour, Managing Director at IKEA Food Services.

“We see a growing demand from our customers to have access to more sustainable food options and we want to meet that need. Our ambition is to make healthier and more sustainable eating easy, desirable and affordable without compromising on taste and texture.”

The meatballs join IKEA’s quickly growing plant-based menu. Stores in Europe already serve vegan soft serve ice cream, and veggie balls and hotdogs are already sold in stores around the world.
