Australia’s Best Ice Cream Winner Is A True Love It Or Hate It Flavour

As an overall genre, ice cream has a very high approval rating. Duh – what’s not to like? Once you get into flavour preferences, though, there’s a lot of room for debate.

Enter the ice cream category winner in the 2020 Australian Grand Dairy Awards.

The ‘best of the best’ Australian dairy and cheese products were announced recently at the Australian Grand Dairy Awards in Melbourne. (Honestly, where was our invite?)

The Champion badge went to – drum roll please! – a premium licorice ice cream made in rural Victoria.

Yes, licorice. One of the most divisive flavours in the known universe is at the core of Australia’s best ice cream.

The winning dessert comes from Gundowring Fine Foods, who operate a 1000-acre farm in Kiewa, Victoria. They use organic licorice from Junee Licorice & Chocolate Factory, across the border in NSW.

“Bold and unashamedly intense, Gundowring’s Licorice Ice Cream is brimming with aniseed flavour,” the winners list description reads. Right now you’re either searching stockists on the Gundowring website or declaring a big, “Nope.”

This licorice concoction is a repeat award winner, last named Champion in 2018. Gundowring Fine Foods also makes less controversial flavours like toasted honey & walnut, coconut and raspberry.

So, how about the other winners in the 2020 Australian Grand Dairy Awards?

Best Dairy Gelato went to Brisbane-based Milani House of Gelato for its pistachio flavour. Mundella Greek yoghurt from Western Australia was named 2020 champ in the Natural Yoghurt field.

Special mention also goes to the damn delicious-looking That’s Amore Gelato Tartufo, which won best Dairy Dessert. (We’re talking hazelnut and chocolate gelato, dark choc ganache centre, and a dark cocoa coating.)

The top prize of the night – the Grand Champion Dairy Product – went to Western Star Salted Butter from Cobden in Victoria. And honestly, can’t we all agree on butter?
