‘Humans Of New York’ Creator Brandon Stanton Is Headed Down Under For The First Time

Brandon Stanton, creator of Humans of New York

Brandon Stanton’s simple, captivating portraits of regular New Yorkers have been filling up our feeds for a good few years now, so we’re stoked to report that the creator of Humans of New York is headed to Australia for the first time in 2018.

In Sydney for an exclusive, one-off show at the Sydney Opera House on February 10, Stanton will take audiences behind the scenes on some of HONY‘s best (and worst) moments.

Stanton’s own story is one worth telling: He moved to New York from Chicago in 2010 after losing his job as a bond trader. With no friends, no money and no training in photography or journalism, he started wandering the streets, capturing portraits of locals and visitors and posting them to his blog.

The Humans of New York book that followed spent a whopping 21 weeks on the New York Times non-fiction best-seller list, eventually reaching the coveted number-one spot.

The intimate and compelling series has seen Stanton expand the project far beyond New York, travelling to Boston, the White House, Iraq, Ukraine, Haiti, Pakistan and South Sudan, among others.

“Brandon Stanton has individually spearheaded an international internet phenomenon. We are so pleased to be providing Sydneysiders with this unique opportunity to hear the stories behind the stories direct from the source. It promises to be an unmissable and illuminating event for everyone who’s interested in storytelling,” Edwina Throsby, Head of Talks and Ideas at the Sydney Opera House, said in a media release.
