Hamilton The Musical Is Finally Coming To Australia
Hamilton the musical will premiere in Australia in 2021, with the show finding its home in Sydney.
Creator (and writer of the book, music and lyrics) Lin-Manuel Miranda said, “Thank you to everyone in Australia who’s been asking for Hamilton. It’s on its way and we can’t wait.”
The story follows America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton, who migrated to the United States as an orphan. He went on to become one of George Washington’s closest advisors during the American Revolution and then the country’s first treasurer. The music is beloved for its mix of hop-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway.
The musical has been high on the must-see lists of theatre-goers ever since it premiered to rapturous acclaim in 2015, winning 11 Tony Awards for theatre, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Miranda.
The show is renowned for its use of cast from diverse backgrounds, including people of colour for major roles such as George Washington and the title role. Producers have said this will be a commitment for the Australian cast, too, telling the Sydney Morning Herald that it would be “incredible” to find leads from Indigenous Australian backgrounds.
There’s been a “war of the musicals” between Australian cities in recent years, with Sydney and Melbourne especially battling over which will host the biggest musical imports from Broadway and the West End.
Melbourne had recent a major win, securing the mega-hit Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for a five-year exclusive run, so it was really Sydney’s turn to have a big opening, even though it will also play host to Frozen the Musical in July 2020.
