Being in a foreign land with little-to-no understanding of the native tongue is enough to make anyone feel a little uneasy. Luckily, tech giants like Google have been around to make things a little easier, by developing technology that gives us the ability to translate other languages in real time.

Google’s latest update has made the whole process even easier. The company recently announced that it will be offering its neural machine translation (NMT), AI-powered translation that can decipher and translate entire sentences into more natural sounding translations, offline.

It’s a huge deal. Now, no matter where you are in the world – internet connection or not – you’ll be able to access a more accurate translation service. So you, (and your mum and dad) can rest a little easier when you jet off on your next overseas trip.

Previously, users could use Google Translate’s offline feature, but the translations were phrase-based, meaning they were pretty rough around the edges. Whereas NMT takes entire sentences and pays close attention to correct grammar, say Google representatives. And as a result, it’s way closer to how a local would actually speak.

Each language takes between 35 and 45mb storage on your phone, and there 59 languages on offer.
