Five Of The Best Events Going Down At Good Beer Week In Melbourne

One of Melbourne‘s best events, and certainly one of its booziest, Good Beer Week is kicking off again this year on May 10 to May 19. The program is packed full of delicious brews, fun events and great food, so whether you prefer beer served cold, sour or in a cocktail, there’s something for everyone.

Australia’s best brewers and restaurants are joining forces for the festival. That means there’ll be drinks from fave breweries like Colonial Brewing Co, James Squire and 4 Pines as well as burgs from Bar Luca, smoked meat from Bluebonnet Barbecue and tacos from Mesa Verde.

There’ll even be some special guest brewers from the States — Goose Island brewery is hosting a massive block party, and The Park Hotel will take you on a tour through some of Europe’s best craft beers.

Every event has been carefully planned to champion beer in all its wonderful forms. There’s so much to see and do at the festival that it’ll be hard to fit everything in, so we’ve put together our top five picks for Good Beer Week 2019.

#1 Goose Island Block Party

When: May 11
Where: Geddes Laneway, rear of Geddes Lane Ballroom, King Street

Good Beer Week Goose Island Block Party

Legendary Chicago brewery Goose Island is bringing its renowned Block Party to Australia for the first time ever. They’ve teamed up with Geddes Lane Ballroom to throw a massive party in Geddes Laneway. Expect to hear from some of Melbourne’s musical heroes like Ecca Vandal, Moaning Lisa and a DJ set from DZ Deathrays. The Hard Aches are coming in from Adelaide to headline.

Of course there’ll be food trucks and art installations, because this is a Melbourne laneway after all, and some of Goose Island’s IPA and sour beers. The brewery will also be pouring a few of their limited edition beers that will only be available on the day.

Tickets are $25 and are available here.

Billed as the “most no holds barred event in Good Beer Week history”, we can’t think of anything better to mark the opening of the brand-new Moon Dog Craft Brewery in Preston. This women’s wrestling match will pit two of the biggest menaces in the sport today against one another — Session Moth Martina all the way from Ireland and the “problem child of Australian wrestling”, Avary.

It’ll be your first chance to see inside the new Moon Dog Craft Brewery venue, and they’ll be serving all of your fave Moon Dog beers all night long. There’ll also be food from Taco Truck and Sparrows Philly Cheesesteaks coming your way. The brewery has promised more announcements about the night, so stay tuned to their socials.

Tickets are $30 and are available here.

The time has come to find Melbourne’s best dodgeball team! Two Birds Brewing and BentSpoke Brewing Co. have teamed up to present the inaugural sporting match, a 16-team tournament to crown the GBW19 Dodgeball Champions.

Competitors will get a free drink from both breweries on the day, and team uniforms and entrance songs are highly encouraged — there are prizes on the day for best dressed and more, so bring out your A-game. There’s also a grand tournament prize going to the winning team.

You can register yourself and five mates to enter as one of the 16 teams now. For everyone else, just rock up on the day with a gold coin donation to watch history in the making.

#4 All Hands On Deck

When: May 11–19
Where: The Workshop, 1/413 Elizabeth Street

You’ll want to be all hands on deck when Melbourne CBD’s famous The Workshop bar is transformed into a beachside oasis. The faux-seaside getaway will be complete with beach huts, chill tunes, beach games and sandcastles. The fun and games will be different every night, as will the beers on tap. Expect beer-inspired cocktails, slushies and tropical food specials as well.

The blowout Beach Party is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 — live bands, DJ’s spinning tracks and free BBQ food will be joining the party, which will go until late as all good parties should.

It’s free entry every night, and dogs are welcome.

#5 Brew Off! Green Man’s Army v Burnley Brigade

When: May 11 (Richmond), May 18 (Carlton)
Where: Burnley Brewing, 648 Bridge Road, Richmond; Green Man’s Arms, 418 Lygon Street, Carlton

Good Beer Week brew off

The competition is sure to be fierce (and delicious) when two of Melbourne’s breweries go head to head to see who can make you the best tasting beer. Staff from Green Man’s Army and Burnley Brigade breweries will each make a Saison pale ale using Styrian Golding hops — the rest of the brewing decisions are up the the teams. Whose concoction will be the best?

The opening party at Burnley Brewing in Richmond will be your first chance to compare the beers. Meet the brewers, tour the facilities and, most importantly, decide which drink you like the most. You’ll have the rest of the festival to cast your vote, and the winner will be crowned at Green Man’s Arms in Carlton. The results party will have food specials and DJs to send off the competition in style.

Entry to both events is free.

There are so many other events for beer lovers, geeks and foodies. You can find out more about everything in the massive program on the Good Beer Week website.
