In Honour Of Elvis Week, Here’s Where To Try The King’s Favourite Sandwich

Elvis week has kicked off overnight in Memphis, Tennessee, and this year’s festivities will be packed with activities commemorating 40 years since the rock-and-roll legend’s death.

But the best way to celebrate the career of a king is to eat like one. On a trip to Denver, Colorado, you can do just that thanks to the notorious Fool’s Gold Loaf.  The “sandwich” is made from an entire loaf of bread, hollowed, a jar of creamy peanut butter, a jar of grape jam, and 450g of bacon baked at 180 degrees for 15 minutes until the whole lot is golden brown.

The origin of the heart-stopping sandwich isn’t entirely clear, but Nick Andurlakis, owner of Nick’s café, first served a Fool’s Gold Loaf to Elvis at the Colorado Mining Company restaurant in 1976.

Elvis and his friends, clearly impressed, later flew to Denver in his private jet, purchased 30 of the monstrous sandwiches and spent two hours devouring them (along with several bottles of champagne) before flying home.

If you’re keen to try it for yourself, make your way down to Nick’s Café, home of the Fool’s Gold Loaf, at 777.5  Sims Street in Golden. It’s open from 5am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, 5am to 1pm on Saturdays and 5am to 12pm on Sundays.

We wouldn’t recommend you try and tackle it alone, so bring some friends.
