What: Rocking since 1971, Roskilde Festival is one of the original large-scale European festivals that sees festival-goers mingle and boogie with the best modern music has to offer. Roskilde Festival is a non-profit organisation, so all money raised from the festival go to a charity to support humanitarian and cultural projects all over the world.

Where: On the fairgrounds outside the city of Roskilde on the island of Zealand, which is about a 30 minute train ride from Copenhagen, Denmark.

When: Though the festival is officially only four days long, many punters arrive four days earlier just to set up camp and start the party early. The eight-day event is held annually at the end of June.

Capacity: Up to 130,000 punters attend – over 30,000 of those are volunteers.

Fun fact: The Roskilde Festival is organised by the Roskilde Festival Charity society whose purpose is to support initiatives benefitting children and young people and supports humanitarian and cultural work. Profits from the festival are donated to charity with 2015’s event estimated to have raised around three million dollars.

Why should you go? Roskilde regularly hosts some of the best and biggest names in music. This year’s line up featured Paul McCartney, Disclosure, Florence + The Machine and Kendrick Lamar to name a few. Add that to the great cause the festival supports and the hundred thousand or so punters ready for a dance, a swim or even the annual nudie run (this Roskilde mainstay sees hardy festival goes strip naked and run around the campsite for a chance to win free passes to next year’s festival – you’d be mad to miss it).
